Webinar (March 2022) Topic: Canine Rehabilitation
Karen is an experienced and licensed human physical therapist and earned a Master degree from UC San Francisco/San Francisco State University in 1996. After adopting an injured dog named Teddy, she soon became passionate about applying her therapy skills and knowledge to the canine population. She is a Certified Canine Rehabilitation Therapist (CCRT) and successfully completed the program offered through the Canine Rehabilitation Institute (CRI). In 2008, she became the first CCRT to practice in her hometown of Santa Barbara. She now owns and operates Atlas Rehabilitation for Canines (ARC), the only stand-alone, state of the art animal physical rehabilitation facility on the Central Coast of California.
As a respected pioneer and influencer in the field, Karen has been an invited guest lecturer at the APTA's Combined Section Meeting, Tri-State CPTA Conference, and multiple veterinary and physical therapy schools. Her most recent opportunity to share her passion was as a keynote speaker for the UCSF/SFSU Doctorate of Physical Therapy program last month. She is an award-winning clinician for her advancements and contributions to the profession and her community. She is considered an international leader in the field and is known for her desire to create a more unified and interprofessional collaborative mindset within the field of animal physical rehabilitation.
Karen has been a fierce advocate and pioneer for the field of canine physical therapy. She serves as the President of the California Association of Animal PT and founded the Animal PT Coalition (APTC) both as part of her decade long quest to help advance the profession and increase consumer access to services. She loves giving back to her community by supporting search and rescue dogs, animal shelters/rescues and contributes to our next generation by serving as a clinical instructor for CRI and offers educational experiences for those who are looking to improve their patient-care outcomes.
She is well loved and supported by her husband, two young boys and her two rescue chihuahua-mixes, Harvey and Rolo.
